Miscellaneous
tidbits of interest or speculation. Some are tragic, some humorous,
and some are probably useless. (When available, I'll gladly provide references to their source, but can't verify
what is listed...please evaluate accordingly.)
Ancient
Virus: The mummified head of Pharaoh Ramses V, who reigned 3,000
years ago, was reported to have had smallpox scars.
Alfred
Nobel patented dynamite in 1863 and made a fortune. Toward
the end of his life, he became a pacifist and began speaking out against
the use of his invention in warfare. In his will, he directed his estate be used to award prizes that would promote peace,
friendship, and service to humanity. The Nobel Prize is awarded each
year on December 10th; the anniversary of his death.
Nit-picking?
This old expression ties to the practice of picking clumps of lice eggs
(nits) out of peoples hair. (Lice infestation was common in past
generations.)
"Humongous
Fungus" It started 2,400 years ago as a single spore invisible
to the naked eye then grew to become a 3.5 mile-wide mushroom.
Dubbed "the humongous fungus," this honey mushroom (Armillaria
ostoyae) covers some 2,200 acres in Oregon's Malheur National Forest.
